1 Peter 5:7 Meaning and Explanation

The picture is of a heavy load lifted off the shoulders and thrown onto Someone able to bear it. The word translated 'care' means anxiety, the kind of worry that pulls the mind in many directions at once. Peter does not soften how much there is to carry. He says all your care, every part of it, the large fears and the small ones that gather in the quiet of the night. And he gives one reason to let it go: God cares for you. The same God who is mighty leans in close enough to be concerned with what concerns us.

Peter had learned this himself. He had sunk in the waves and felt a hand catch him (Matthew 14:30-31), and he had been carried back after a bitter failure. So when he tells us God cares, it comes from a man who was caught and restored. In Jesus we see God's care take on flesh, a Shepherd who lays down His life for the sheep. We can hand Him our anxiety because He has already shown how far He will go to hold us.

Hear how the sentence is tethered to the one before it. Peter has just said, "Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God," and casting our care is how that humility takes shape. Worry, oddly, is a form of pride, the crouched insistence that the load is ours to carry and its outcome ours to secure. To fling it onto God is to confess we are not the keeper of our own lives; He is. The Psalmist sang this long before: "Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee." And the pledge underneath is intimate, not abstract. God is not merely able to bear the weight; He is inclined toward us, His attention bent low over what troubles us. We hand over the anxiety because we have been received by the One who wants it.
