What Does 1 Samuel 19:21 Mean?
Undeterred, Saul sends a second group of messengers, and they too prophesy. He sends a third, with the same result. Three times his men are seized by the Spirit of God and turned from their deadly errand to prophecy. Saul's stubborn will breaks again and again upon the power of God.
The threefold repetition drives home a truth: human determination, however persistent, cannot overpower the purposes of the Lord. Each wave of messengers becomes a witness rather than an executioner. God patiently, even gently, frustrates the king's design, protecting David while giving Saul opportunity after opportunity to recognize the hand against which he fights.
