Samuel foretells that Israel will fall to the Philistines and that Saul and his sons will die the next day.

What Does 1 Samuel 28:19 Mean?

The word grows heavier still. Samuel announces that the LORD will hand Israel over to the Philistines, and that the very next day Saul and his sons will be with him, that is, among the dead. The army will be defeated and the king's house will fall. The sentence is final and near.

This is among the darkest passages in Saul's story, and Scripture does not soften it. Yet even here the reader is reminded that the timing and outcome of all things rest with God. Death is the door every person passes through, and the only safe preparation is a life surrendered to the Lord while there is still time. The verse calls us to make our peace with God today, not to wait for a tomorrow that may not be ours.
