What Does 1 Samuel 5:1 Mean?
After defeating Israel and seizing the ark, the Philistines bring it home as a trophy. Ebenezer was the place of Israel's defeat; Ashdod was a leading Philistine city, a center of their power and worship. To the eye, it looked as though Israel's God had been conquered along with Israel's army.
Appearances can deceive. The ark seems a captive, yet the living God is never carried where He does not choose to go. What the nations imagine as their victory becomes the stage on which the Lord will display His power. He goes among His enemies not as a prisoner but as a King about to make Himself known.
