Context

This completes Paul's portrait of the Lord's return: the dead raised, the living gathered with them, and all brought into lasting union with Christ.

What Does 1 Thessalonians 4:17 Mean?

After the dead in Christ are raised, the living are gathered with them -- "caught up together" -- to meet the Lord. The word translated "caught up" means to be seized and carried swiftly, a sudden act of God rather than a gradual ascent. Crucially, the living and the dead are united: "together with them." The very thing the Thessalonians feared, separation from their departed loved ones, is answered by reunion. They rise as one people.

The phrase "to meet the Lord" uses a word that described citizens going out to welcome an arriving king and escort him in. The emphasis falls not on the mechanics of clouds and air but on the destination: "so shall we ever be with the Lord." This is the heart of the promise. Whatever else accompanies the Lord's coming, its final result is permanent, unbroken presence with him. Paul does not dwell on geography or timing; he dwells on togetherness -- with one another and with Christ -- forever. That is the comfort he wants the grieving church to carry.

In the Original Language

"Caught up" is harpazo, to seize or snatch suddenly; "to meet" is apantesis, the formal welcome a city gave an arriving dignitary.

Application

Live in the assurance that the goal of God's plan is to bring you, with all his people, into His unending presence.
