Timothy must watch his own life and his teaching, persevering in both for the good of himself and his hearers.

What Does 1 Timothy 4:16 Mean?

Paul gathers his counsel into one charge: watch your life and your teaching, and keep at both. Character and doctrine must be guarded together.

Perseverance is the key word. By continuing faithfully in godly living and sound teaching, Timothy serves both his own soul and those who listen to him. A faithful minister's life and message become a channel of God's saving work to many.
