Concluding chapter four, Paul explains how he can call affliction light: by fixing his attention not on temporary visible things but on the eternal unseen.
What Does 2 Corinthians 4:18 Mean?
The secret to enduring is where you look: not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. Paul gives the reason in a clean contrast -- the visible is temporal, passing, but the invisible is eternal. The affliction of the previous verse becomes bearable precisely because Paul refuses to let his gaze settle on the temporary trouble in front of him and instead fixes it on lasting realities.
"Look" here means to direct attention, to fix the focus of one's life, not a passing glance. What we steadily fix our eyes upon shapes how we live and what we endure. The seen things -- comforts and hardships alike -- are temporary; they belong to a world that is passing. The unseen things -- the glory to come, the renewal of the inner person, the eternal purposes of God -- are permanent. Paul is not denying the reality of what is seen; he is ranking it. The visible is real but temporary; the invisible is more real because it is eternal. This reorders the whole of life. Decisions, sufferings, and priorities all look different when measured by what lasts forever rather than what we can see today. To fix our eyes on the unseen is to live by faith, weighing every present thing against eternity.
In the Original Language
The verb skopeo (σκοπέω) means to fix attention upon, while proskairos (πρόσκαιρος), "temporary," contrasts with aionios (αἰώνιος), "eternal."
