Context
An official in charge of the temple vestments is given orders. He complies without apparent resistance, perhaps not yet understanding what is truly about to happen.
What Does 2 Kings 10:22 Mean?
The detail is theatrical and cruel: Jehu ensures that the Baal worshippers are dressed in priestly vestments, making them formal participants in a great ceremony. They are given robes that mark them as believers, as if the external dress can seal their identity and their fate. There is something about Jehu's care for these details—providing the correct vestments, ensuring the ceremony looks right—that makes the deception even more elaborate, even more false.
It is the gentleness of preparation that makes the betrayal sting more sharply. Someone who cares about such things, who ensures dignity in dress, seems trustworthy. Yet that same person is leading the trusting toward slaughter. This is what Jesus means when He warns about wolves in sheep's clothing. The outward form of respect can mask the deepest betrayal. We are left to wonder: what ceremonies in our own time might be hiding deceits? What outward shows of respect might mask hidden intentions?
Application
Be alert to the way external trappings of respect and formality can disguise a lack of genuine care. True respect for others never masks hidden harm.
