2 Kings 2:13 Meaning and Explanation

The mantle falls. In the turmoil of the ascension, as Elijah is lifted away, his clothing slips from him and descends to Elisha. Elisha rises, takes it up, and walks back to the Jordan. This is not a casual gesture. The mantle is the prophet's mark, the visible sign of authority and calling. Elijah has used it twice now: once to divide the Jordan in their crossing, and once implicitly in his departure, as it falls to the waiting hands below.
