Context
In ancient Israel, music was understood as a conduit for the Spirit; prophetic utterance often came in response to music (1 Samuel 10:5-6). The minstrel was a ritual figure, a bridge between the human and the divine.
What Does 2 Kings 3:15 Mean?
But now bring me a minstrel. And it came to pass, when the minstrel played, that the hand of the LORD came upon him, this is the turning point. Elisha does not pray in silence or in loud supplication. He calls for a musician. The harp or lyre sounds; the strings sing. In that sound, the weight of the Lord's presence settles upon the prophet like dew, like fire, like wings.
Elisha becomes the channel through which God will speak deliverance to the three kings. The Lord's hand, that power which parts seas, speaks worlds into being, holds us in being at every moment, comes upon him. What was despair becomes hope; what was death becomes life.
Application
God meets us where we are: in our need, in our worship, in the honest cry of our hearts. Sometimes the medium of that meeting is unexpected, a song, a stranger, a moment of beauty.
