When asked which route to take against Moab, they decided to go through the wilderness of Edom rather than the direct road.

Context

The direct route through Moabite territory was impossible for a surprise attack; the roundabout way through Edom's desert was longer and harsher but offered tactical advantage.

What Does 2 Kings 3:8 Mean?

And he said, Which way shall we go up? And he answered, The way through the wilderness of Edom, a simple question, a simple answer, and yet it begins the trial. The wilderness of Edom was not a highway but a test of endurance. Water would be scarce. Supplies would dwindle. Yet it was the path that led to victory.

We do not always know the cost of the road we choose until we are walking it. The way forward often looks harder than the familiar route, and that hardship is precisely what prepares us.

Application

The path to right action is often inconvenient and demanding. We choose it not because it is easy but because it is true.
