This verse comes in the middle of David's song of deliverance (2 Samuel 22), which parallels Psalm 18. Having described God's dramatic rescues, David shifts to praising God's flawless character and reliable word, drawing out the assurance available to all who trust Him, not only to himself.
What Does 2 Samuel 22:31 Mean?
This verse makes three confident claims: God's way is perfect, His word is proven, and He shields all who trust Him. After recounting his many rescues, David steps back to declare the unchanging character behind them. "His way is perfect" means God's conduct and purposes are complete, flawless, and without defect -- He never acts wrongly or falls short. Even when His ways are hard to understand, they lack nothing in wisdom or goodness.
"The word of the LORD is tried" uses the image of metal refined in fire. God's promises have been tested and have proven pure and reliable; they hold up under pressure. David is not speaking theoretically -- he has staked his life on God's word and found it dependable again and again. Then comes the personal application: God "is a buckler to all them that trust in him." A buckler is a small shield carried into close combat, a picture of protection in the thick of danger. Notice the breadth -- "all them that trust." This shelter is not reserved for kings or heroes; it covers everyone who takes refuge in God. David's hard-won theology turns outward into an invitation: the God whose way is perfect and whose word is proven will be a shield to you, too, if you trust Him.
In the Original Language
The Hebrew tamim means perfect, complete, whole, without blemish. Tsaraph means to refine or test by fire, as with precious metal. Magen means shield or buckler, a defense carried into battle.
