Because they rejected the truth, God gives them over to a powerful delusion so that they believe what is false.

What Does 2 Thessalonians 2:11 Mean?

This sobering verse follows directly from the last. Because people "received not the love of the truth," God responds by sending "strong delusion." This is not God taking delight in deceiving; it is the solemn principle that those who persistently refuse the truth are at last handed over to the falsehood they preferred. God confirms the direction a hardened heart has already chosen.

Scripture elsewhere describes this same dynamic, where God "gives up" people to the path they insist upon. There is mercy in the warning: it is spoken so that readers will not trifle with the truth or imagine they can reject it without cost. To turn from light long enough is eventually to lose the capacity to see it. The verse calls us to receive truth while our hearts are still tender, before refusal hardens into a delusion we can no longer escape. God's justice here simply ratifies a love of the lie already present.
