Wherefore—therefore, because Judas' office must be filled, because Scripture prophesies his replacement. Peter sets the standard: of these men which have companied with us all the time. Not just any believer, but someone who has walked with the apostles, witnessed the life and ministry of Jesus, been part of the community from the beginning. The time is precise: all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us. This phrase, 'went in and out,' suggests ordinary living, the daily rhythm of ministry—teaching in the temple, walking the roads, gathering with disciples. The candidate must be a original witness, someone whose memory goes back to the baptism and whose eyes have seen what theirs have seen.
