That he may take part—the chosen one will step into the apostolic office, inherit the role that Judas held. The ministry and apostleship are not personal possessions to be grasped but offices to be held in service to Jesus. From which Judas by transgression fell: Judas did not slip or stumble but fell by transgression, by deliberate betrayal. He turned against his Master. And so his office became vacant. The chosen replacement will take up what Judas abandoned. There is poignancy here: the position itself is not tainted, but Judas is gone. He went to his own place—a euphemism heavy with judgment. Judas is where he chose to be, having forsaken the fellowship of the apostles.

The phrase 'go to his own place' echoes Psalm 109 and carries an eschatological weight: each person finds their ultimate destination, their final home, according to their choices. For Judas, betrayal led to destruction. For the one chosen to replace him, faithfulness will lead to apostolic authority and participation in Christ's mission. We too are choosing our own place by our daily choices: faithfulness leads toward God's presence; betrayal, toward separation. The stakes are eternal.
