Passing through Phrygia and Galatia, the missionaries are forbidden by the Holy Ghost to preach the word in the province of Asia.

What Does Acts 16:6 Mean?

The team moves west across Asia Minor, no doubt intending the great province of Asia with its capital Ephesus. But the Holy Ghost, by means Luke does not describe, closes that door for the present.

God sometimes guides by a no. Asia was not rejected, only postponed; Paul would later spend years there, until all the province heard the word (Acts 19:10). For now the Spirit is steering the gospel toward a riverbank and a jail in Philippi. A closed door in a faithful life is often the first sign of a better one opening.
