Still on the Areopagus in Athens, Paul is making the unknown God known to a crowd of thinkers (verses 22 to 23). Here he does something striking: he quotes their own Greek poets back to them, building a bridge from what they already half-knew toward the living God who made them all.
What Does Acts 17:28 Mean?
Paul gathers our whole existence into three words: we live, we move, we have our being, and all of it is 'in him'. We are not self-contained. The God who made us is the air we breathe in, the ground we walk on, the source that keeps us going from one second to the next. Then Paul reaches for the Athenians' own writers, 'certain also of your own poets', and quotes a line they would recognize: 'we are also his offspring'. He meets them where they stand, using truth they had already glimpsed to point them home.
