What Does Acts 5:24 Mean?
The captain of the temple was responsible for order and security in the sacred precincts, and an inexplicable escape has happened on his watch. The leaders' perplexity looks forward as much as backward: they 'doubted of them whereunto this would grow.'
Their question is better than they know, and Gamaliel will soon give it its true form: is this work of men, or of God (verses 38-39)? Perplexity is a crossroads; it can open into honest inquiry or harden into opposition. What they fear as a growing threat is in fact a growing salvation.
