What Does Acts 6:3 Mean?
Rather than naming their own candidates, the apostles invite the congregation to look out seven trustworthy men from among themselves, whom the apostles will then appoint over the work. The choice of the people and the appointment of Christ's commissioned servants join in a single act of order and trust.
Notice the qualifications. Even for practical administration the standard is spiritual: an honest reputation, fulness of the Holy Ghost, and wisdom. Distributing bread fairly in a wounded congregation takes as much grace as preaching. God's work has no unspiritual departments, and the character He asks of His servants is not lowered when the task looks ordinary. Whatever we are given to do in His house, this verse sets the measure for how it should be done.
