Context

James is writing about facing trials with joy. Right after telling believers that testing produces maturity, he tells them how to navigate it: ask God for wisdom.

What Does James 1:5 Mean?

In one sentence: when you do not know what to do, ask God for wisdom -- He gives it generously and never scolds you for asking. James assumes we will lack wisdom, especially in trials, and points to the remedy: simply ask.

God gives "liberally" -- openly, generously -- and "upbraideth not," meaning He will not shame or belittle you for needing help. The only condition, in the next verses, is to ask in faith rather than divided doubt.

In the Original Language

The Greek "sophia" (wisdom) is skill in living rightly. "Haplos" (liberally) means simply, generously, without holding back. "Aiteo" (ask) is to request.

Application

Make asking God for wisdom a first response, not a last resort -- especially in trials and decisions -- trusting that He gives gladly.
