What Does Acts 7:1 Mean?
Stephen stands before the council in Jerusalem, accused by false witnesses of speaking against the temple and the law (Acts 6:13-14). The question of the high priest, Are these things so, formally opens the trial and invites his answer.
Stephen does not plead for his life. He answers with the longest sermon recorded in Acts, retelling the whole story of God and his people. Like his Lord before this same council, he turns a courtroom into a pulpit. A hostile question can become an open door, and God gives his witnesses what to say in the hour they need it (Luke 12:11-12).
