What Does Acts 9:7 Mean?
Luke pauses on the witnesses. The men traveling with Saul know something real has happened: they hear the voice, they are struck dumb, and shortly they will lead a blinded man into the city by the hand. Yet the encounter itself is not theirs; Paul later adds that they did not understand the voice that spoke to him (Acts 22:9).
The event was public enough to silence bystanders — no private dream, but something that stopped a whole company in the road. Still, revelation here is also intensely personal: the same moment that bewilders the companions converts Saul. It is possible to stand beside a work of God and remain a spectator. Hearing about Christ and being addressed by him are not the same.
