What Does Amos 6:14 Mean?
Against their boast of self-made strength stands a single divine "But." The God of hosts -- the Lord of all armies -- will "raise up" a nation against them. The very power they congratulated themselves on is answered by a power they cannot resist, summoned by the One they ignored. Their borders, named so proudly in verse 2, now mark the full reach of their affliction.
"From the entering in of Hamath unto the river of the wilderness" stretches from the far north to the southern edge -- the entire extent of the land. There will be no region untouched, no frontier safe. The nation that trusted in its own arm finds the whole horizon turned against it.
