What Does Amos 6:7 Mean?
"Therefore" gathers up everything before it into a verdict. Those who were first in indulgence will be first in chains -- the front of the procession into captivity. The very prominence they enjoyed becomes the measure of their fall; to be chief in comfort is now to be chief in loss.
The banquet of "them that stretched themselves" -- the same sprawling ease of verse 4 -- is simply "removed," carried away as though it had never been. There is a stern justice in the reversal: appetite that recognized no limit will meet the hardest limit of all. The feast does not last, the couches are emptied, and the song falls silent. What they trusted to shield them cannot follow them into the land of exile.
