Amos 9:10 Meaning and Explanation

The sifting separates out those who must fall: "All the sinners of my people shall die by the sword." These are identified by their attitude -- they "say, The evil shall not overtake nor prevent us." Their defining sin is the confident denial that any reckoning could touch them, the very complacency Amos has confronted from the beginning of his preaching.

Their words echo back to the start of the book, where the comfortable put far away the evil day. Here that denial meets its answer. The ones who insisted disaster could never reach them are precisely the ones it reaches. There is a sober lesson in this: presumption is not safety, and to deny the warnings of God is not to escape them but to be unprepared when they arrive. The chaff that the sieve lets fall is this hardened confidence that would not listen.
