Amos 9:2 Meaning and Explanation

The prophet stretches the picture to its limits. "Though they dig into hell, thence shall mine hand take them; though they climb up to heaven, thence will I bring them down." From the deepest grave to the highest sky, there is no realm beyond God's reach. The imagination strains to find a hiding place and finds none.

These verses are the dark mirror of a comforting truth. Elsewhere the psalmist rejoices that wherever he goes, God is already there to hold him. Here that same omnipresence becomes inescapable for those who set themselves against Him. The God from whom no creature is hidden cannot be evaded by the guilty. The point is not cruelty but the impossibility of running from the Maker of all places. There is nowhere to flee from the One who fills heaven and earth.
