What Does Colossians 3:10 Mean?

Paul completes the change of clothing. Having put off the old self, they have put on the new man -- a new identity received in Christ, as real and definite as a garment newly worn.

This new self is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him. There is an echo of humanity's original creation in God's image, now being restored in the believer through a deepening knowledge of God. The renewal is ongoing -- a continual remaking into the likeness intended from the beginning. Paul presents the Christian life as the recovery and renewal of what it means to bear God's image, lost through sin and now being reformed in Christ. For the Colossians, this lifts the whole project of holiness above mere rule-keeping. They are being remade after their Maker's pattern, growing in true knowledge into the image they were created to bear.
