As Paul moves toward the close of his letter, he turns to the practice of prayer, urging persevering, watchful, thankful prayer that undergirds the whole Christian life and mission.
What Does Colossians 4:2 Mean?
Paul urges believers to keep on praying persistently, staying spiritually alert, with thanksgiving woven through it all. The command "continue in prayer" calls for steadfast perseverance -- not occasional or fitful prayer, but a devoted, ongoing constancy. The word behind it pictures sticking closely to something and holding fast. Prayer is meant to be a settled practice of the Christian life, not merely a response to emergencies, and Paul knows it requires deliberate persistence to maintain.
He adds, "watch in the same." To watch is to stay awake and alert, the opposite of drowsiness or distraction. Prayer is not to be done half-asleep or on autopilot; it calls for attentiveness, a wakeful mind engaged with God and aware of what needs prayer. There may be an echo here of Jesus' own call to His disciples to watch and pray. Finally, Paul attaches the note that sounds through this whole letter: "with thanksgiving." Even our watchful, persevering prayer is to be saturated with gratitude. Thanksgiving keeps prayer from becoming a mere list of requests and roots it in trust, remembering all that God has already done. Steadfast, alert, and grateful -- this is the prayer Paul commends, the kind that sustains a believer through every season.
In the Original Language
The Greek "proskartereite" (continue) means to persevere, to be devoted to, to hold fast. "Grēgorountes" (watch) means to stay awake and alert. Both are paired with "eucharistia" (thanksgiving), a recurring theme of the letter.
