What Does Daniel 1:2 Mean?
The text is careful about who is acting: "the Lord gave" Jehoiakim into Nebuchadnezzar's hand. Babylon's victory is real, but it is not the deepest cause. The holy vessels, made for worship, are carried to Shinar and set in the temple of a foreign god, as if Babylon's idol had won.
Here is a hard and steadying truth. The defeat of God's people did not mean the defeat of God. He gave them over, in discipline and in a larger plan, and He keeps His eye on those vessels through every chapter to come. Nothing devoted to Him is ever finally lost in the house of another god. What looks like the triumph of idols is held within the sovereign hand of the living God.
