What Does Daniel 1:3 Mean?
Having taken the city and its treasures, the king now reaches for its future. He commands Ashpenaz, the head of his court officials, to bring in choice youths from the royal line and the leading families of Israel. Conquest in the ancient world often meant absorbing a nation's most promising children into the service of the empire.
These are not nameless prisoners but sons of privilege, taken from home and family to be remade in Babylon's image. Yet God has a way of planting His servants in the very heart of foreign courts. What the king intends as a stripping away of identity, the Lord will use as a sending out. The young men carried into the palace are, unknown to Nebuchadnezzar, witnesses placed exactly where they are needed.
