What Does Daniel 1:4 Mean?
Ashpenaz is to choose the best: young men without physical defect, attractive, quick in wisdom and knowledge, fit to stand in the royal palace. There they will be immersed in the language and literature of the Chaldeans, the most advanced learning of the age. Babylon means to retrain their minds, their speech, and their loyalties.
It is striking that the very gifts God gave these youths in Judah make them valuable to Babylon. The Lord does not waste what He has placed in His servants, even when others try to bend it to their own ends. A believer can be schooled in the wisdom of the world and still keep a heart set on God.
