What Does Daniel 11:17 Mean?
The northern king prepares to advance with the whole weight of his kingdom, even bringing reasonable terms, and tries a familiar tactic: he gives a daughter in marriage to weaken the southern court from within. But the scheme fails; she does not take his side, and the plot collapses. Once more a political marriage is used as a weapon, and once more it does not hold.
The chapter has now shown two such alliances crumble. Bonds entered for advantage rather than love carry no power to bind. Scripture sets against all such calculation the picture of a covenant kept in faithfulness, where the bond holds because the heart is true. What scheming cannot accomplish, steadfast love can; and only love, not strategy, makes a union that lasts.
