Daniel says God confirmed his words by bringing a great disaster, a calamity so severe that nothing like it had been done under all heaven as was done to Jerusalem. The greatness of the city's privilege made for the greatness of its judgment.
Where much is given, much is required. Jerusalem held the temple and the covenant, and its fall was therefore singular. Yet to confess that God confirmed his word is also to trust that he will confirm his word of mercy. The same God who does not speak in vain has spoken promises of healing that he will surely keep.
