After recounting God's mercy and the renewal of the covenant, Moses summarizes the response God seeks. The verse distills the whole law into reverent, loving service.
What Does Deuteronomy 10:12 Mean?
God's requirements come down to a heartfelt relationship: to revere Him, walk in His ways, love Him, and serve Him completely. The phrase "and now" signals a summary -- after rehearsing all God has done, Moses gathers the response into a few essential commitments. These are not heavy burdens piled up but the natural shape of a life rightly oriented toward the God who redeemed Israel. Each element flows into the next: reverence leads to obedience, obedience expresses love, and love issues in glad service.
Notice how relational the requirements are. To "fear" God is to hold Him in awe and reverent trust; to "walk in all his ways" is to let His character direct daily conduct; to "love him" is to give Him genuine affection; and to "serve" Him "with all thy heart and with all thy soul" sweeps in the whole person. This is the same wholehearted devotion called for in the Shema, now framed as God's good and reasonable expectation. What He asks is not less than everything -- but it is everything offered in love, not in dread.
In the Original Language
The verb "yare" (fear) means reverent awe and trust, not terror. "Halak" (walk) pictures conduct as a path one travels, and "avad" (serve) is the devoted service owed to the LORD with the whole self.
