What Does Ecclesiastes 2:6 Mean?
The works grow more ambitious still. The king builds pools to capture water and channel it to his forests of trees. In a dry land, command of water is command of life and growth, a mark of great wealth and engineering.
Yet even the one who can gather water cannot make himself the source of life. The pools must be filled by rain he does not command. Quietly the verse reminds the reader that all our reservoirs depend on a supply from above, and that the living water the soul most needs is offered freely by God rather than stored up by human effort.
