Ecclesiastes 6:11 Meaning and Explanation

Solomon draws his observations toward a question. 'Many things' multiply, words, possessions, pursuits, and each one seems only to 'increase vanity,' adding to the vapor rather than to the substance of life. The more we pile up, the heavier and emptier the heap can feel. So he asks plainly, 'what is man the better?'

The Preacher is clearing away false hopes so that a true one may stand. If accumulating more does not enrich the soul, then the answer must lie elsewhere, not in quantity but in the right object of our trust. This humble question prepares the heart to look beyond all that increases vanity, toward the God in whom alone our striving finds its rest and our lives their genuine gain.
