What Does Ephesians 4:3 Mean?
Paul calls his readers to be 'endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit.' Notice that unity is not created by our effort; it is given by the Spirit. Our task is to 'keep' it -- to guard and preserve what God has already made. The hard work is in protecting a unity we did not produce.
This unity is held together 'in the bond of peace.' Peace is the tie that binds the body together; where peace frays, unity unravels. Paul has shown that Christ made peace; now he asks the church to live in it. Preserving unity is a diligent, daily labor of love.
