What Does Ephesians 4:7 Mean?

Having stressed oneness, Paul now affirms variety: 'unto every one of us is given grace.' Unity is not uniformity. Within the one body, each member receives a particular gift of grace. The same Christ who makes us one also makes us wonderfully different.

Each portion is measured 'according to the measure of the gift of Christ.' The grace given to each is apportioned by Christ Himself, fitted to His purpose for that person. No member is left out, and none is identical to another. The body is one, yet richly diverse in the gifts its head supplies.
