What Does Ephesians 5:4 Mean?
Paul turns to speech again: 'filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting' have no proper place. Crude or degrading talk, however common, is 'not convenient' -- unfitting for those who follow Christ. The mouth of a saint is meant for better things.
'But rather giving of thanks.' In place of coarse speech, Paul sets gratitude. The grateful heart finds a different vocabulary, one of thanksgiving rather than filth. It is a lovely substitution: where the old life filled the air with corruption, the new life fills it with thanks to God.
