Believers take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, the word of God.

What Does Ephesians 6:17 Mean?

Paul names two more pieces: 'the helmet of salvation' guards the head, as the assurance of salvation protects the mind. Knowing we are saved steadies our thoughts and shields us from despair. Salvation is not only our hope but our protection in the struggle.

Then comes the one offensive weapon: 'the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.' God's word is the believer's sword, the means of meeting and turning back the enemy. With Scripture in hand, wielded by the Spirit, the believer is not merely defended but able to strike at falsehood and stand firm in truth.

In the Original Language

rhema (ῥῆμα), 'word' -- a spoken word or utterance, here the word of God.
