What Does Esther 1:2 Mean?
Shushan (Susa) was one of the great royal cities of Persia, its citadel a place of audience halls, treasuries, and guarded gates. The throne is named deliberately: everything in this book will turn on who has access to it and who is barred from it. Power here is concentrated in one seated figure.
The narrator lingers on the setting because the palace itself becomes a character. Its walls and gates, its inner and outer courts, will mark the boundaries between life and death for those in the story. A queen will be banished beyond them; a Jew will sit at their threshold; and a decree will pass out from them to the ends of the earth.
