What Does Esther 1:7 Mean?
Even the drinking vessels are extravagant, golden and no two alike, a touch of refinement meant to impress. The wine is royal and abundant, given according to the state of the king, that is, on a scale befitting his majesty. Nothing is rationed; everything overflows.
The abundance of wine is not an idle detail. In a few verses the king's heart will be merry with wine, and a rash command will follow. The narrator sets the cups before us so that when the trouble comes, we understand the soil in which it grew. Splendor and intoxication can loosen a ruler's judgment.
