What Does Esther 2:8 Mean?
When the decree is published and many young women are gathered to Shushan, Esther was brought also into the king's house. The passive phrasing is telling; she does not volunteer but is taken, swept up with the others into a fate she did not choose. An orphan girl is carried into the machinery of empire.
Yet the narrator places her precisely under the custody of Hegai, the very man whose favor will prove decisive. What looks like helplessness is, in the book's deeper logic, positioning. The hand that is never named is moving Esther into the one household from which a queen will be chosen, without trumpet or sign.
