What Does Esther 3:5 Mean?
When Haman sees with his own eyes that Mordecai will not bow, he is full of wrath. A man at the summit of power cannot endure a single subject who withholds honor. His exaltation, far from satisfying him, has made him exquisitely sensitive to the one place it is denied.
This is the portrait of pride that the book will develop and then dismantle. Haman possesses everything the empire can give, yet one unbowed head poisons it all. His rage, like the king's anger at Vashti, shows how the powerful can be unmade by the smallest defiance. From this fury will pour a scheme monstrously out of proportion to its cause.
