Esther 6:7 Meaning and Explanation

Haman begins his answer, repeating the king's phrase, the man whom the king delighteth to honour. He launches eagerly into his vision of supreme honor, every word chosen to glorify the recipient, whom he assumes is himself. His imagination runs to royal splendor.

The narrator lets Haman build his elaborate proposal across the next verses, each detail dripping with the honor he craves for himself. The dramatic irony is exquisite. The reader knows what Haman does not, that he is composing the script for his rival's triumph and his own degradation. His mouth is digging the pit his pride has prepared.
