Exodus 2 for Kids

For Kids · 5 min with a grown-up

A baby floats down a river in a basket. A princess finds him. And nobody knows yet that this little boy will grow up to rescue a whole nation.

Today's Story

It was a scary time to have a baby boy in Egypt. So when one mama had a beautiful baby, she hid him at home as long as she could.

When he got too big to hide, she had an idea. She wove a little basket, and she rubbed it with sticky tar so no water could get in. She laid her baby softly inside and set the basket among the tall reeds at the edge of the river. His big sister, Miriam, hid close by to watch.

Soon the princess — Pharaoh's own daughter — came down to the river. She saw the basket. She opened it. And there was a crying baby! Her heart melted. “This is one of the Hebrew babies,” she said softly.

Quick as a flash, Miriam stepped out. “Should I go find someone to help take care of him for you?” “Yes!” said the princess. So Miriam ran and fetched… the baby's very own mother. And just like that, his mama got to care for him after all.

The princess named the baby Moses and raised him as her own son, right there in the palace.

Moses grew up. But he never forgot that he was one of God's people. One day he saw a slave master hurting one of them. Moses tried to stop it, but it went too far — and he had to run far, far away into the desert. There he became a shepherd.

And all that time, God heard His people crying out in Egypt. God remembered them. And God was getting ready to do something very big.

A Big Word

Memory Verse

Talk About It

  1. Baby Moses's mama was scared, but she trusted God and placed her baby in the river. When is it hard to trust God with something — or someone — you love?
  2. God used a princess, a big sister, and a basket to keep Moses safe. Who are the people God uses to take care of YOU?
  3. God heard His people crying and quietly started a rescue, long before they could see it. What's something you're waiting and praying for right now?
