What Does Exodus 23:20 Mean?
This verse means that God promises to send a divine messenger to guard and guide His people safely to the destination He has prepared for them. As Israel faces the long and dangerous road to the promised land, God assures them they will not travel alone. He sends an Angel ahead -- to keep them in the way and to bring them to the place He has already made ready. The journey is not aimless; it leads somewhere God has prepared in advance.
There is deep comfort in the two verbs here: to keep and to bring. God promises both protection along the road and arrival at the goal. The following verses urge Israel to heed this messenger, for, as God says, "my name is in him" -- a striking sign of how closely this Angel carries God's own authority and presence. For a people stepping into the unknown, the promise is that the God who calls them also goes before them, securing the path and the destination alike. We are never sent on a journey God has not already prepared.
