Exodus 35:13 Meaning and Explanation

The table of shewbread (or 'presence bread') stood in the Holy Place, displaying twelve loaves of bread representing Israel's twelve tribes. Like the ark, this table required wooden construction with gold overlays and carrying staves. Its vessels—bowls, dishes, and flagons made of pure gold—were used for the frankincense offered with the bread. The table communicated God's provision and care for His people, with bread signifying nourishment and life sustained by divine presence.

The constant renewal of the shewbread—fresh loaves baked each Sabbath—meant that the table symbolized both sustenance and covenant faithfulness. The table's presence in the sanctuary reminded worshippers that God provided for His people. Creating the table and its vessels of solid gold (or gold-plated wood) was expensive and demanded careful metalwork; ordinary bread dishes would not suffice for sacred use.
