Exodus 35:16 Meaning and Explanation

The altar of burnt offering stood in the courtyard outside the main sanctuary structure. Built from acacia wood and overlaid with bronze (brass), it was the largest furnishing in the tabernacle—the place where animal sacrifices were burned as offerings to God. The bronze grate allowed ash to fall through while the fire burned on top. Its staves enabled it to be carried during the wilderness wanderings. All its vessels—tongs, forks, pans, and other tools—were bronze to withstand the intense heat. The laver, a large bronze basin, stood nearby for priests to wash their hands and feet before approaching the altar or entering the Holy Place.

The altar and laver together established a pattern for approach to God: worship involved both sacrifice (at the altar) and cleansing (at the laver). Bronze, a sturdy metal resistant to heat, was the appropriate material for sacrificial use, while its reddish color may have symbolized the blood-offering. The craftsmanship required for these items was substantial—casting large bronze pieces, fashioning all the tools, and shaping the basin from a single piece of metal demanded master metalworkers.
