Exodus 4 for Kids

For Kids · 4 min with a grown-up

Moses still isn't sure he's the right person for the job. So God gives him three signs — and a helper — to show him He means it.

Today's Story

Moses was still nervous. “But what if nobody believes You sent me?” he asked God.

God said, “What's that in your hand?” “My shepherd's staff,” said Moses. “Throw it on the ground.” Moses threw it down — and it turned into a wriggling SNAKE! Moses jumped back. “Now pick it up by the tail.” Moses grabbed it, and — poof — it was a plain wooden staff again.

“Now put your hand inside your coat,” said God. Moses did. When he pulled it out, his hand was covered in sick white spots. He tucked it back in, pulled it out again — and it was healthy and whole. Two amazing signs.

But Moses kept finding excuses. “I'm not a good speaker. My words get all tangled up.”

God was patient with him. “Who made your mouth, Moses? I did. Now go. I will help you speak. I will teach you what to say.”

But Moses begged, “Please, please send somebody else.” So God gave Moses a helper — his own brother, Aaron. “Aaron can do the talking. And take your staff. I'll do wonders with it.”

So Moses said goodbye to his sheep, took God's staff in his hand, and started the long walk back to Egypt. He was still a little nervous. But this time, he wasn't going alone.

A Big Word

Memory Verse

Talk About It

  1. Moses kept saying, “I can't, I'm not good enough.” God kept saying, “I'll help you.” What's something you sometimes feel like you “can't” do?
  2. God gave Moses his brother Aaron so he wouldn't be alone. Who is a helper God has given you?
  3. God turned an ordinary shepherd's stick into something amazing. What ordinary thing do you have that God might use for something good?
